Stop #16 - Death of the Confederacy
1134 First St Garden District
This house holds a sad legacy in that it was built by slaves. It was designed and owned by Judge Jacob U Payne, a close friend of Confederacy President Jefferson Davis. It is said that during this time period, men of means took pride in architectural knowledge, and usually designed their own houses to display the knowledge, rather than hiring designers. This is the house where Jefferson Davis died in 1889.
