As you travel around New Orleans, you'll probably notice a lot of snowball shops. No, these are not the snow-cones you're used to from little league. These shaved ice delicacies were developed right here at Hansen's in 1939. They are so good that they have even received recognition from the prestigous James Beard Foundation for their culinary contribution. The shop doesn't look like much, in fact it hasn't really changed in almost 100 years. But there is almost always a long line around the corner, and it is always worth the wait!
During the Great Depression, Ernest & Mary Hansen started making these shaved ice snoballs for neighborhood children, using an innovative machine built by Ernest. This same machine is still in use to this day, and still makes the finest shaved ice you'll ever have. Mary developed her own flavored syrups, and the recipes are still being used. Hansen's is the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day, and experience a piece of national culinary history along with a friendly smile.
